multiversus may have started with what is known as the Ultra Instinct Shaggy meme. Taken from YouTuber mussel edition episode from Scooby Doo! Legend of the Fantosaurus— where a mesmerized Shaggy single-handedly defeats a biker gang — it was a viral hit that some say culminated in the creation of a free WB brawl. That’s why it was a shock to find out that Velma Dinkley is actually the standout fighter of Mystery Inc. multiversus not Shaggy.

In fact, I tend to go even further. Velma is one of the best characters in the game by a huge margin. With her inquisitive nature and supportive skills, she offers fans a unique way to play. For example, Velma does not shrug, instead relying on her words during a fight. Her bright ideas can sing the praises of in-flight rivals, and her motivational speeches can heal allies. Essentially, Velma will have your back and, if forced, will beat the eternal “Jinks” out of unsuspecting enemies.

Velma is a force to be reckoned with in capable hands. This is despite her lack of physical strength. She’s not as fast (or deadly) as Arya Stark, and doesn’t have the explosive power of the Steven Universe. However, she still excels both of them when it comes to being a suitable teammate. This is what concerns multiversus. While it has solo and free-to-play options, the main game mode is a 2v2 team fight format. There is give and take. Combining your abilities with the capabilities of a partner to overcome resistance. Velma does it with ease.

Velma’s main role as a support character is to provide assistance during battle. This is done by buffing allies and damaging/debuffing enemies. One of the things that makes her stand out is the level of support provided and the overall strength of her various abilities. Take a neutral attack and Velma’s special abilities. By quickly pressing the attack button, you can send projectiles of her words of support that seek out targeted friends and enemies. If these word bubbles hit an enemy, they will manipulate them, dealing decent damage. This effect changes if the target is an ally; when hit, they not only speed up (can move faster), but also create additional word bubbles to attack enemies and heal Velma.

Velma’s neutral special move called “Motivational Speaker” is also a solid ability. This move sends out a beam of support that hits enemies repeatedly, dealing damage, and also inflicts a debuff called Weakness, a debuff that causes them to take additional damage and knockback from attacks for a limited time. If he lands on an ally, he will not only heal, but also send out a stronger version of the beam.

What is good about these attacks (other than the obvious)? Well, first of all, they both provide healing. They also complement each other. “You can do that!” the beam not only weakens the opponents, but also makes them a target for Velma’s words of encouragement. Most of her other moves are similar in this regard. Each one deals solid damage, especially when boosted by a teammate, and also provides strong buffs. The only downside is the cooldown timers that prevent Velma from spamming the best parts of her arsenal.

This type of synergistic play can be found in other characters as well. Again, Steven Universe comes to mind. But none of them offer as many buffs and debuffs as Velma. She can give her team armor and health, boost her speed, apply stacks of ice (to slow down and eventually freeze players), and weaken enemies while dealing tons of damage. Velma can even train people – by throwing a book at her teammate, she can reduce the team’s cooldown duration, which no other character can do without using a perk/item. Basically, Velmla proves to be a powerful ally no matter the circumstances.

Noted YouTuber and fighting game expert John Crofts (jmcrofts) also thinks Velma is “insanely strong”. In his video below, you can see how he not only proves that claim by dealing almost 400 damage, but also mentions how well she supports the team and that she “has the potential to be at the top level.”

The ability that really confuses Velma has to be her passive Snooping. During a match, certain moves can lead to clues. Gather enough and she can call in a police car to incapacitate an undercover player from the opposing team. This is similar to Steven Universe’s bubble ability, except that the cop car will try to take them out of the game if they can’t escape, while the bubble just keeps people in place. Seeing someone being picked up and carried off the stage is as comical as it is spectacular.

Now this step may seem unfair. I mean, starting a fight and then calling the police is definitely Karen-style shit. However, it takes some time to gather the necessary evidence to make this call. And if Velma dies before the machine is called, she will have to start all over again when she respawns.

There are other downsides to worry about as well. First, Velma is always a target. Removing her from the game also removes her buffs and debuffs. Expect her to be in a hurry right from the start. She is also not very fast or strong on her own; multiversusassassins will circle around her, making her a poor choice (most of the time) for 1v1 matches. Finally, her Up Special isn’t that much. Players with Velma will need to properly use her jumps and dodges before using this move in order to survive being knocked off the set level.

Despite her limitations, Velma what chick. EVO champion SonicFox seems to agree. Although he tends to destroy opponents no matter who he uses, his video titled “Velma can be the way” demonstrates just how big she can be during a fight. Whether it’s a game of flight using verbal projectiles or getting up close and personal with her bright ideas. She even gets the better of Arya Stark despite her superior speed.

Velma’s powerful attacks are backed up by her support abilities, making her one of the best characters in the game. multiversus. In the right hands, she would be nearly invincible no matter who she teamed up with. We all thought it was going to be Shaggy’s show. And in some aspects, he is definitely a good choice for solo and team fights. But Velma is the true representative of Mystery Inc. She personifies the iconic animated series (like Shaggy) and also covers for anyone stupid enough to bang her with stylish frames.
