Hands Of Necromancy Is So Good It Could Have Been Hexen III

In the mood for a retro FPS, I dug through the new releases on Steam and poked around a few without much clicking. Until Isound Hands of Necromancyand then played it all weekend. it Hexen-how First-person shooter with huge sprawling maps, lots of weapons, many types of enemies and some fresh ideas original to the genre.

In three chapters, as it should be in all such games, 21 game cards are distributed between them through three nodes. Each hub has a set of portals that can be unlocked by completing quests in a particular location and moving between them, finding keys, new abilities, and so on. It gives it some flavor Metroid in the midst of fast-paced, feverish combat and exploration.

What I really like here is that Hands of Necromancy doesn’t feel obligated heretic as well as Hexen, but rather inspired by them, in order to then be independent. So, as you’d hope, there’s a mixture of ranged and melee combat here, with sword and fireball in your starting lineup, and then constantly expanding as you progress. You’ll find a whirlwind spell that allows you to unleash mini tornadoes that knock enemies back and, if pinned against a wall, actually take their lives. There’s a frosty ice stick, a pretty impressive scythe, and even a pistol if you go far enough.

Enemies are an amazing mix: crawling crawling creatures, magic-wielding flying wizards, bats (these not incredibly annoying!) and stomping golems. In the second chapter, all sorts of even more deadly beasts join the same gang, until the fights turn into a crazy flurry of colors and blood.

It’s all in 2.5D but with very nice lighting, it’s all built in GZDoom. The pixelated graphics on the creature art are fantastic, and while the game is a little too prone to bleak environments, the locations feel detailed and fun to explore. And more importantly, the top-notch level design focuses on large areas to explore filled with underground chambers, maze-like crypts, and cities full of puzzles.

Your character, himself an evil sorcerer, is not a hero who wants to expand the range of his abilities and fights not to survive, but because you just want to fight. This obviously doesn’t affect the experience much until you’re reminded of it when you pick up a powerful weapon and cackle villainously.

Oh, and as you progress, you get the ability to transform into different types of enemies, including a small snake, a piercing golem, and a horned devil-like beast. This can be used to solve puzzles and find secrets, or just to fight differently. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an FPS that gives a character the ability to turn into enemies and it’s such a great idea.

The game is rated at 7 hours of play time, which is completely insane. Almost the same amount of time I spent just on the first chapter, exploring every nook and cranny, trying to find secrets and spending a lot of time. I think you could get through it much faster, but it would be such a waste of time.

It’s amazing stuff, a game that absolutely could have been released alongside Raven Software’s mid-90s fantasies.at the shooters and detained. (Although people would be puzzled by lighting technology.) Admittedly, you can get Hexen for a buck fifty right nowbut there’s a good chance you’ve already done it. Hands of Necromancy is a welcome addition to this set, and the developers Team HON has become a name to follow.
