Today’s Pokémon Gifts revealed more details about how the gym system in
Pokemon Scarlet as well as Violet works. You will play as an academy student and defeating some of the coolest coaches in the region is only part of your school designation. Tough but fair.
Depending on which version of the game you have, you will visit Narania (Scarlet) or Uvu (Purple). As part of your training program, you will go on a “treasure hunt” throughout the Paldea region. The treasure hunt consists of three different storylines, while the Gym Challenges consist of only one branch. As such, you can probably expect a lot more extensive content beyond the time-honored tradition of destroying gym leaders. Between you and the “champion rank” there are eight more leaders, and at the end of the path, the Victory Road awaits you. The trailer also showcased a Glaseado Gym Leader named Pear, who uses Ice-type Pokémon like the new Zetitan.
The trailer confirmed what was previously tweeted at the official Pokemon Account. Instead of restricting Gym Leaders to a specific order, you can choose when you want them to be removed. Giving players the ability to challenge gyms the way they want is a cool departure from the series’ rigid formula. I remember the old days when Charmander’s choice was the “challenge mode” of Kanto games because fire was terrible against stone and water gyms, and not particularly good against electric. Those who chose Chikorita in the Johto titles faced a similar problem. scarlet as well as VioletThe Gym system finally allows all beginner Pokémon to be on an equal footing, and I’m here for that.
It’s not the first time Pokemon experimented with an unconventional gym system. in Pokemon Sun as well as Moon titles, the series replaced gyms with “trials” in which players would sometimes complete puzzles instead of actually challenging the leaders (or fighting the trainers who work in the gym). However, the storyline was still fairly linear compared to what scarlet as well as Violet presented so far.
