3 editors try to hack TikTok using eyebrow pencil and lip blush

It’s fair to say that TikTok has no shortage of unique – sometimes downright bizarre – beauty trends. If you’ve recently seen creators trying to find their perfect lip color using brow pencil as lip liner and their blush as lipstick, we won’t blame you if you’re skeptical about the idea – neither are we.

However, after watching countless videos of people testing the hack, we couldn’t deny that some of the results were just that good. Thus, it made sense to test it out to see for yourself and make sure that this hack is indeed a reliable way to give lips the most attractive color. Keep reading to find out what our three editors think after the social media hack attempt.

Viral Eyebrow Pencil and Blush TikTok Hack

Before we dive into our testing experience, let us reveal a hack for you. The viral trend is believed to have begun with @yokenzieb. In her video, she suggests that your ideal lip shade be achieved by shaping the lips with an eyebrow pencil, blending blush in the center of the lips, and covering them with gloss.

How can an eyebrow pencil work as a lip pencil?

If you’re wondering how you can use an eyebrow pencil as a lip pencil, you’re not alone. Eyebrow pencils tend to be hard and waxy, which isn’t necessarily ideal for lips. Lips can be sensitive, so a very harsh formula that tugs on them is unacceptable. With most brow pencils, you also won’t get the smoothness and glide of traditional lipliner.

So if you’re going to try a trend, opt for a soft brow pencil that blends easily, like L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Definer Waterproof Mechanical Brow Pencil. This is also a great option because the tip is very thin so you can define your lips precisely. Also, apply lip balm to your lips a few minutes before you try the hack, and don’t forget to blot off the excess right before applying your lipstick so you can apply it comfortably.

What are the best blushes to use for this hack?

If we’ve learned anything over the past year that has been full of love and admiration for blush, it’s that not all blush is the same. Cream or liquid blush is best for this trend because it can be easily blended on the lips. A formula like L’Oréal Paris Glow Paradise Glow Paradise Lip and Cheek Tint is a great option as its thin formula is comfortable and easy on the lips.

Experience of our editor with hacking

This trend is certainly intriguing, which is why our three editors put it to the test. Read on to learn more about their experiences and final thoughts.

As a big skeptic of TikTok beauty trends, I didn’t have high hopes when I tried this, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was also skeptical about this trend because I have very dark brows and fairly fair skin, so I figured my brow pencil would create a stark contrast when used as a lip liner. However, I tried it with my L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Definer waterproof mechanical brow pencil in Dark Brown.

I started to line the edges of my lips with a pencil and immediately noticed that the color on the lips is not as saturated as on the eyebrows – which is good, given my hesitation. Although I will admit that by the time my lips were fully defined, I felt pretty silly with the cold tone of brown defining my lips.

I then smudged the edges a bit with a lip brush to blend the line, and applied a soft terracotta cream blush to my lips with my fingertips. I applied the blush from the center of the lips to the edges so that it blends smoothly with the eyeliner, and then covered the lips with a transparent lip gloss.

To my surprise, I really liked the result. The cool-toned lip liner created a subtle lip contour, and the cream blush made my lips and cheeks really come together. This is a simple hack that only took three minutes, so if you’re intrigued, give it a try.

In short, not for me. There are two important things that this hack doesn’t take into account: if you normally use a brow product that is not a pencil, and the color of your brows. My favorite brow product is L’Oréal Paris Unbelieva-Brow Longwear Waterproof Brow Gel, which won’t work for this hack, so I swapped it out and opted for L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Definer Waterproof Mechanical Brow Pencil instead. .

While lip liner with brow pencil is no different than using lip liner or eyeliner, color is also very important. My eyebrows are dark brown (if not black). This is not the lip liner color I gravitate towards, unless I’m trying to create a 90s look. If that wasn’t enough to stop me from embracing this technique, it completely lost me with all the blush-related work.

Traditional blush is not designed to saturate the lips, and if you use powder blush, it’s even harder to get the pigment to stay on your lips. Through experience, I’ve found that you need to use a cream blush or liquid cheek shade and pick a color that’s really rich and bold for it to show. This of course creates a blending problem when your eyeliner is deep, dark brown and your blush is peach.

My top lip is also a lot darker than my bottom lip, so for the color to show up there, I had to really layer it up, which made my lips feel heavy and uncomfortable. I also had to apply more brow pencil after I applied the blush because the top line kept disappearing under the blush. When the colors don’t match, it’s very obvious where you’ve made mistakes or done unwanted mixing. And then everything mixed up!

All in all, I could see how this can work in a pinch – you’re outside, you forgot your lipstick, and you need to tint your lips. But for a big lipstick lover like me, it’s ineffective. First, I always have lipstick or lip liner at home, so replacing my favorite lipsticks with an option that isn’t really meant to do what they do doesn’t make sense to me. It’s just a lot of formula hacking and more work to get the same result which is not guaranteed. I’ll skip this and keep using my favorite lipstick while I wait for the next makeup hack that’s on the TikTok store.

I love TikTok beauty trends precisely because they constantly make me think, “Why didn’t I think of this?” However, this hack made me think a little at first. I usually don’t wear a brow pencil because when I do, my brows look too dark. However, I was intrigued by the idea that you can use just about any color on your lips for the perfect cohesive look. I picked up my favorite pencil for those rare occasions when I tint my brows—the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Brow Magnifier Pencil in Blonde—and sat in front of the mirror.

I started by carefully outlining the shape of the lips with a pencil. Immediately I was surprised to find that the color is not as dark as I thought it would look on my fair complexion. Instead, it actually complemented it well and made my lips look fuller and plumper. I decided to add color to the lips by filling in the bottom lip with more lip liner.

Then I used a creamy pink blush and ran it along the inside of the lips where there was no liner. I took a step back to admire the finished product and to be honest, I was blown away by how he seamlessly tied my no-make-up and makeup look together in seconds.
